El Castillo - The pyramid at Chichen Itza

Darrell and Elaine at the El Castillo Pyramid at Chichen Itza

We are visiting during the Vernal (Spring) Equinox.  So we are stopping for an indepth tour of Chichen Itza and then we will return on the day of the Equinox for the Festival to view the serpent Kukulcan descend the grand staircase (Actually the serpent's shadow is viewed at sunset on the staircase).

The pyramid is 80 feet high and has a giant staircase on each of the 4 sides.

Kulkulcan is also known as Quetzalcoat - an incarnation of the feathered serpent god of the Maya.

Temple of the Jaguars - which features reliefs and carvings of the most important rain god - Tlaloc.
