This mall was a rare oasis of western civilization in the very much third world city of Nairobi. We very much enjoyed the food at ArtCafé which allowed dining inside as well as outdoor seating. I remember I had a large mocha coffee after my wonderful meal.
The terrorist group al-Shabaab - from Somalia - took over 1000 people hostage and killed over 72 people during the 4 day standoff. The mall was gated and we remember the guards searching our vehicle during the entry.
Reports from the scene indicate that people in the restaurant were questioned about whether they were Muslim or not. If they could answer questions proving they were Muslim - they were allowed to leave. If not - they were shot.
The mall was virtually destroyed during the standoff with the terrorists. We were so thankful to be back home when this attack occurred.
On 21 September 2013, at about noon,[3][8] as few as four masked assailants[9] (initially numbered between 10 and 15[10][11]) attacked the upscale Westgate shopping mall in the Westlands district of Nairobi.[12] Fighting with armed police continued over 48 hours later.[13] The gunmen reportedly carried assault rifles and wore combat fatigues. There were additional reports of grenade explosions. Police surrounded the area and urged residents to stay away.
