Peral Ascensor - Funicular in Valparaiso

Valparaiso has many elevators (call them a funicular or an ascensor) throughout the city. After a wonderful lunch - we rode the Peral Ascensor back down to the port area.

Elevators in Valparaiso
"The majority of the construction of the city of Valparaiso is on the hills which surround the bay. For that reason, one of the most regularly used forms of transport in this city are ascensores (elevators). In fact, only Ascensor Polanco is an elevator in the strictest sense of the word, the rest are funiculars. All charge small fares, usually less than US $0.20. At one time there were 33, but only the following 15 remain:
El Peral is located on Cerro Alegre, this ascensor leaves from Plaza Justicia and climbs to Cerro Alegre’s Paseo Yugoslavo and the Palacio Baburizza. It is 171 feet long with a 48-degree gradient. This is one of the best walking areas in the hills, easily linking up to Cerro Concepción and its namesake ascensor. It was opened in the year 1902." by Lyle
