Climbing under the Victoria Falls Gorge Bridge

The 108 year old Victoria Falls Bridge was opened on 12 September 1905 by Charles Darwin’s son, George. The powerful structure that took a mere fourteen months to build represents an incredible feat of cutting edge Victorian design and a magnificent example of industrial revolution engineering. Once at the heart of Cecil John Rhodes’ vision for a Cape to Cairo Railway, today the bridge is the second greatest tourist attraction in Victoria Falls after the Falls themselves.

I am notorious for being afraid of heights - so it was just a little scary to be hanging under a bridge 300 plus feet in the air.  Also - this is the only bridge across the Zambezi for hundreds of miles and every time a vehicle went across - the whole bridge shook.

But it was cool.  We put on climbing harnesses and climbed down under the bridge to see the construction

We are clipped in to the cable - but actually it felt really safe.

We made it across the bridge.  We are now on the Zimbabwe side  A beautiful day!
